Rick is daring to do something different; attaching himself to new ideas and trying to get to another place. Where is it? What is it? Extremely strange and beautiful. Based on illusionary practices; nothing real; nothing hard or objective—it’s all subjective. Sincere expressions of his state of mind.
You’ve got to enjoy the humor and think about it at the same time. Ethereal, ephemeral yet concrete—the geometric structure—the calibration is amazing yet he’s moving into the illusionistic woo-woo.
Dreams of Picasso, the quality of the painting and the color and the form. The colors are unusual, he has a very good command chromatically, their qualities are quite beautiful. The particular way of putting colors together is unique. Mysterious and strange. Concrete dream states. Fictitious characters and places or is it?
If there was ever an imagined scenario this is it. Kind of like German Expressionism. Some of the artwork is humorous because it’s so unexpected.
Each has a coherent intellectual statement but it’s also emotional. It brings up the mind/body question.
He’s creating in a very refined and humorous manner. This is just paint and space. Where are we looking? The surface is dematerializing. The shapes are unknowns. Something mysteriously floating around space. He’s taken painting to a whole other imagined place.
Rick has a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, 2004.
