GARNERVILLE — GARNER Arts Center proudly presents FREE STYLE Idiosyncratic/Eclecticism, opening Saturday, March 8th. Curated by Brett DePalma, this group exhibition showcases the work of thirty-four artists across various mediums and assorted ephemera, including large-scale sculptures, found objects, digital displays, paintings, and neon signage. Encompassing both of Building 35’s Main Gallery and Ned Harris Gallery spaces, FREE STYLE is an immersive exhibition with a distinct point of view.
Artistic freedom is introduced to enable different modes of thinking, thus advancing the cause of aesthetic evolution through diversity of expression. My goal is to open possibilities rather than restricting freedoms... I am to discover and express the depth of character and thought that makes for a richer domain from which springs a more authentic view of life.
- Curator, Brett DePalma
Curator Brett DePalma is a painter and educator based in Nyack, NY. As an exhibiting artist since 1970, his work has been seen throughout the United States and Europe and is held in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney, and the US State Department, among other major institutions. As a contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, DePalma was a fixture of the 1980s East Village art scene. He is a current GARNER studio artist and serves as an active member of GARNER Arts Center’s curatorial committee.
FREE STYLE Idiosyncratic Eclecticism presents work from a selection of artists based in New York City, the Mid-Hudson, and Western Catskill regions. One might ask for the meaning of this exhibition’s title phrase, “Idiosyncratic/Eclecticism.” For this, we once again turn to the curator.
A non-hierarchical style in which there is no superior form over another and the coexistence of expression is not only allowed but promoted. This is to avoid the commodification of extraction of attention, giving the viewer a sense of confusion leading to boredom. A variety of examples for attention are there to combat such a malaise of creative curiosity.
