GARNER Arts Center is proud to present Enrichment by acclaimed visual artist, Jo Yarrington, with accompanying sound and electronics by composer and sound artist, John Morton, on view in the Ned Harris Gallery at Building 35. This exhibition, comprising sequential, interrelated installations, invites visitors to explore the dual nature of technological advancement, displaying both its seductive beauty and its latent dangers through a series of interactive, visitor-activated installations.
Exploring the resonant frequencies between uranium enrichment and radioactive decay, Enrichment offers a seductive and thought-provoking visitor experience that probes the complex impact of technology and science on human lives and the environment.
Viewers of Enrichment are greeted by the striking image of an antique display cabinet positioned on its side, housing an array of Uranium spheres spilling out onto the floor. In this same room, Uranotype photograms document fragments of tin cans used by miners during the 1940s and 50s, collected from abandoned Uranium mines in Utah.
Leading further into the gallery, along each side of an eye-level corridor, are orbs displayed on metal shelves reminiscent of a science lab. Each orb contains manipulated imagery sourced from archival atomic bomb documentation and personal archives, transforming into miniature projection devices that evoke both memory and consequence.
The final installation is composed of a range of tear-shaped glass vessels, forming a circle over sand mixed with plastic and debris. Activated by motion, Geiger counter clicks trigger sound and light, casting visitors as witnesses to the aftermath of unseen forces.
GARNER Arts Center presented Yarrington and Morton’s previous collaboration, Variations on a Dream, as an interactive installation for its 2024 Hudson Valley Maker Faire. Jo Yarrington received a 2025 “Support for Artists” grant in the field of Visual Arts from the New York State Council on the Arts to support the presentation of Enrichment at GARNER Arts Center.
Running concurrently in Building 35’s Main Gallery is RESONANCE, a solo exhibition by painter and musician Paul Kostabi. GARNER Arts Center will also celebrate the public opening of John Morton’s semi-permanent outdoor sound installation, Minisceongo Overlay, in conjunction with these gallery premieres.
Jo Yarrington is an internationally exhibited artist whose practice spans monoprints, artist books, alternative photography, and archival installations. Her work draws inspiration from durational practices such as walking, pilgrimage, and improvisation. She has received fellowships and grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, NYSCA, NYFA, and the MacDowell Colony, to name a few. Yarrington represented the United States at the Sharjah Biennial and participated in the Berlin Biennial. She is a professor of studio art at Fairfield University and resides in New York City.
John Morton’s work has been featured across the United States, including installations, performances and residencies at The Kitchen, Target Margin Theater, and the Kohler Arts/Industry Program. His sensor-based sound environments, such as Central Park Sound Tunnel, Sonic Hotel, and Fever Songs, have earned support from the NEA, NYSCA, and NYFA, and have been spotlighted by NPR’s “American Mavericks” and the American Music Center’s “New Music Box.”
Join us as we celebrate the premiere of Yarrington and Morton’s latest multimedia collaboration, Enrichment, a compelling fusion of art, science, and history that transforms the Ned Harris Gallery into a living elegy.
