Reimagining Monuments with Clay:
how to care for our memories, ourselves and the landscape?
A Four Class spring cycle with Bel Falleiros
Ages: 5 - 12
We are going to use clay to discuss the idea of a monument. The students will create three dimensional solutions, individually and in collaboration, to express their ideas on what a monument should be. They will look inside to find the core values and memories that are most important for them to manifest in sculpture form. Starting with small models on day one, the projects will grow in scale over the class cycle to culminate in a temporary outdoor installation at GARNER Arts Center. Together, we will reflect on the cultural and ecological impact of human presence in nature and how it manifests in our constructed landscapes. Contemporary, historical and prehistoric references will be presented to expand and bring critical awareness to the theme, as well as to make space for each participant to contribute to this important issue of our time from their center-heart-place.
